The thyroid is a small gland in your neck shaped simply as a butterfly and is known as an endocrine gland. Your thyroid releases hormones that can affect the entire body's metabolism. There are times where the thyroid may become enlarged, may contain cysts or nodules. There are many ways to treat thyroid conditions. Many times a thyroid function test is utilized as well as imaging such as ultrasound. This helps diagnose nodules and/or cysts within the gland. Your surgeon may then recommend surgery in which they will remove a portion of the thyroid or the entire thyroid. This is done by making a small incision at or just below the thyroid gland. Many times the nodules and/or cysts are non-cancerous but will not know until the thyroid has been removed. Your provider will discuss the best treatment option for your condition.
